Designing a custom label

How to design the label printed for your deliveries in the label designer: size, fields, barcode, logo and free text, for each label type.

Updated

On this page

In the label designer you design the label printed for your deliveries yourself: choose the label size, decide which fields appear on it, and place each field, barcode, logo or text exactly where you want it. The design is saved in your account and used every time you print labels.

The label designer is an add-on. To turn it on for your account, contact support.

Opening the label designer

  1. Go to Settings => General => Printing and Scanning.
  2. In the Label section, in the Custom label row, click Open label designer.

Next to the button you can see which labels currently print with your custom design. If no label uses a custom design yet, it shows Regular labels.

Note: Only users who can edit the account settings can open the designer.

Label types

At the top of the designer there are four label types, each with its own design:

  • Destination: the delivery’s main label, with the recipient’s details.
  • Return: the label of a return, with the sender’s details.
  • Greeting: the greeting label, for deliveries with a greeting.
  • Order items: a label listing the items in the delivery.

Switch between the types to design each label. To print a label with your design, turn on Use custom design for this label for it. While the switch is off, that label keeps printing with the regular LionWheel design. A ✓ appears next to every type whose custom design is on.

The first time you open the designer, each label starts with a design that already holds the main fields. You can build on it, or clear the label and start from scratch.

Adding elements to the label

The Elements panel at the side of the designer lists everything you can add. Drag an element onto the label, or click it to add it. Use the search box at the top of the panel to find a field by name.

The elements are grouped:

  • Elements: barcode, package counter (such as 1/3), serial number, order items, organization logo, company logo, free text, line and box.
  • Organization: your organization’s name, tag and phone, and the company.
  • Task: the delivery’s IDs (barcode number, tracking code, order ID, original ID), creation and delivery dates, time window, driver, notes and quantities.
  • Destination: location name, city, address, floor and apartment, region, recipient name, phone, entrance, entrance code and location notes.
  • Sender (return): the sender’s address and contact details, for return labels.
  • Payment: cash on delivery, delivery fee, age verification and leave next to the door.
  • Gift: greeting, gifter name and gifter phone.
  • Custom fields: the active custom fields in your account.

The panel only shows fields that are active in your account. For example, the cash on delivery field appears only if cash on delivery is on for you.

A label can have up to 80 elements.

Editing an element

Click an element on the label to select it. Drag it to move it, and use its handles to resize it. A panel with its settings appears at the side of the designer:

  • Position and size: X, Y, width and height in millimeters, for exact placement.
  • Font size, Bold and Alignment (start, center or end), for elements with text.
  • Show title: shows the field’s name before its value, such as “City:”.
  • Show quantity and Show notes: on the order items element.
  • Show number: prints the number under the barcode.
  • Thickness, Direction (horizontal or vertical) and Filled: for lines and boxes.
  • For free text, type the text to print, up to 500 characters.

At the bottom of the panel you can bring the element to the front, send it to the back, duplicate it or delete it.

Keyboard shortcuts

  • Ctrl+Z undoes the last change, and Ctrl+Y (or Ctrl+Shift+Z) redoes it.
  • Ctrl+D duplicates the selected element, and Delete removes it.
  • The arrow keys move the element by half a millimeter, or by five millimeters with Shift.
  • Esc clears the selection.
  • Ctrl+S saves the label.

On a Mac, use Cmd instead of Ctrl.

Label size and other settings

Pick the label size from the list in the top toolbar. It holds common label roll sizes, such as 100 x 150 mm, 4 x 6 in, A6 and 100 x 100 mm. When you pick a size from the list, the design scales with it and keeps its proportions.

When no element is selected, the Label settings panel appears at the side of the designer:

  • Label size: width and height in millimeters, from 20 to 300. Here the elements don’t scale; they only stay inside the label.
  • Copy design from: copies another label type’s design to the current one.
  • Reset to default design: brings back the starting design.
  • Clear label: removes all elements.

The size is shared by all label types, and each label prints on a page of this size.

The Powered by LionWheel strip is always printed at the bottom of the label, so elements can’t be placed in that area.

Preview

In the Preview panel, search for a delivery by task ID, tracking code or order ID, and pick it. The label in the designer fills with that delivery’s details (when you open the designer, the latest delivery is picked for you), and below it you see the label exactly as it prints. The preview doesn’t mark the delivery as printed.

Saving

Click Save in the top toolbar. The design applies to every label you print from now on. If you try to leave the designer before saving, your browser asks you to confirm.

How labels print

  • While the custom design is on for at least one label type, all labels print one per page. Types with a custom design print at the size you set in the designer, and the rest print with the regular design.
  • The number of labels per delivery and their order don’t change; they follow the settings in the Label section (settings guide).

Note: Set your label printer’s paper size to the size you chose in the designer, or the label may come out cut off or scaled down.
